THE KYFFIN WILLIAMS TRUST

The Trust’s initial objective when it was established in 2007 was to build a dedicated gallery to Kyffin Williams in his native Angelsey. Through Sir Kyffin’s own genorosity, the auspicies of the Isle of Anglesey County Council, the stalwart work of its staff in the Education and Life-long Learning unit, and with the support of many public bodies and hundreds of individuals who contributed so generously, Oriel Kyffin Williams was built as an integral part of Oriel Ynys Mô in Llangefni. This splendid gallery was opened in 2008, and it has a wonderful rolling programme of works by Sir Kyffin and others.

The Trust has two other objectives; to foster the public understanding of art, especially among young people, and to give other artists the opportunity to express themselves and exhibit their works.

Since 2009, when it was established, the annual Kyffin Williams Memorial Lecture (given alternately in English and Welsh) has been delivered by Professor Tony Jones, Professor Prys Morgan and Ms Jan Morris. The next lecture will be by Mr David W. Meredith on the 11th of May 2012.

Every three years the Trust organizes The Kyffin Williams Drawing Prize for artists resident in Wales or who are connected to Wales. There are three prizes, a first prize of £3000, a second prize of £2000, and a prize of £1000 for Young Artists under 28 years of age. The winners in 2009 were Louisa Theunissen and Hedd ap Hywel. The closing date for the 2012 competition is the 16th of May. (For details of this year’s competition contact Nicola Gibson at Oriel Ynys Môn.)
